Introduction
With the ongoing “human malware” situation, many in-person SQL Server events and conferences have been canceled or postponed. To partially fill the void, a number of upcoming virtual SQL Server Conferences have popped up. I will be presenting sessions at two of these free conferences next week.
Data Platform Discovery Day 2020
Data Platform Discovery Day is a one-day virtual conference starting on April 29, 2020. It is intended for folks looking to make a career change. The event is also for data platform beginners wishing to expand their skill sets into areas into new areas. This is a grassroots, community-driven day. Well-regarded speakers will be presenting introductory, 100-level sessions on topics across the Microsoft Data Platform.
Whether your interest lies in database performance, data visualization, or data development we intend to have material across the spectrum. These sessions will help you expand your skill sets or introduce you to a new career in data.
On April 29th, there will be ten hours of content across US time zones. Sessions will begin at 9:00AM Eastern Time, with a new session starting each hour. My session starts at 5:00PM Eastern time.

High Availability/Disaster Recovery 101
How do you design a SQL Server 2019 infrastructure in order to meet specific Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO) service levels? There are many aspects to consider, from technology choices and licensing, to policies and procedures. This session outlines and compares the various HA/DR technologies available in SQL Server 2019, showing how you can combine them to design and build a solution to help meet your HA/DR goals. It also covers how to come up with the necessary policies to make the technology actually work in your situation.
Here is the agenda for the U.S. Edition. You can register here.

Data Weekender Europe
Data Community Weekender Europe is a new online conference running on Saturday May 2, 2020. It is hosted by various professionals from around the world.
With many events canceled or postponed across Europe (and the world) in March, April and May, we wanted to put on an online data platform conference for the community. This may help fill that void left by the canceling of the in-person events. This will be held on a day that hopefully, most people can attend. My session starts at 16:45 CEST.

Dr. DMV’s Troubleshooting Toolkit
Dynamic Management Views and functions allow you to easily see exactly what is happening inside your SQL Server instances and databases with a high level of detail. You can discover your top wait types, most CPU intensive stored procedures, find missing indexes, and identify unused indexes, to name just a few examples. This session presents, demonstrates and explains a complete set of diagnostic DMV queries that you can easily use to detect and diagnose configuration and performance issues in your SQL Server instances and databases.
This session goes into exhaustive detail on how to interpret the results of each of the diagnostic queries, including relevant background information on how to properly configure your hardware, storage subsystem, operating system, SQL Server instance and databases in order to avoid performance and scalability issues.
Here is the schedule for the event. You can register here.

Final Words
Both of these events are free. You can listen to and watch them from the comfort and safety of your home or office. Because of this, there is no travel time or expense. If you are interested in any of the sessions, I urge you to sign up and put it on your calendar before you forget. I hope to see you there!
